Style: A First Look at Orla Kiely for UNIQLO

Orla Kiely, a posh Irish, London based designer has recently launched a collection for Japanese bargain clothing chain UNIQLO. While the whole collection recently launched in the UK I believe, a few items have already popped up in the New York City stores. On Friday I stopped in the store on 34th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues to check it out!

So far, UNIQLO's NYC 34th Street store has several Orla Kiely scarf designs featuring her signature mid-century style graphic prints. All of the scarves are priced at just $12.90. As you can see, they are mainly her floral and foliage motifs:

I believe that later in the season there will also be a t-shirt collection and possibly even more items! From the looks of the display posters, there will also be a few more prints - a taxi cab motif and an apple & pear motif. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest and letting you know all about it.

For now, grab those scarves while they last! They're the perfect fall-weight addition to a peacoat or wax jacket!

September 11th Edition: Visit the 9/11 Memorial Site

If you haven't been yet, a trip to the beautiful grounds of the 9/11 Memorial Site is a worthwhile experience to reflect and remember those lost 11 years ago today. The site itself is FREE to visit, although a reservation for a visitor's pass is required. Reservations for most of the day are often available the morning of your planned visit. Simply sign up at: http://www.911memorial.org/visitor-passes. You can then either print out your visitor's pass or pick it up at the memorial preview site. There are donation boxes located on-site should you wish to make a contribution to the upkeep of the site and to the development of the museum.

Although the museum has yet to open, there are many key landmarks to view at the site (which at this point is designed as a sort of memorial park): the two fountains built into the buildings' original foundations displaying the names of those lost, computers that enable you to look up a friend or loved one and locate their name, and the survivor tree

The Survivor Tree: An Emblem of Hope

The survivor tree, as one of the fantastic volunteer guides related to me, was the last living thing to be pulled out of the rubble. The tree was then grafted with a portion of another tree and re-planted at the memorial site. When you get up close to the tree you can see the rough bark of the original tree and the smooth bark of the grafted section that has grown since 2011. The tree symbolizes those that survived the tragedy.

The memorial site remembers the victims from the World Trade Center, American Airlines Flight 11 and 77, United Flights 175 and 93, and the 1993 WTC bombing. The preview site offers an extensive collection of memorabilia left by loved ones at the site, video documentaries, a booth where you can share your personal story or memory of someone who was lost, and memorial artwork.

Overall, I believe the site was very tastefully designed with the collaboration of many of the victims' family members.  It will be great to see their ideas fully materialized when the museum is completed. As it stands, the site is an ideal venue for quiet, personal reflection - with a few inspirational emblems of hope like the beautiful survivor tree!

Style: Front Row at Kaelen for NYFW 2012

Haute on the Spot's special correspondent, James Tang, snapped these exclusive front row shots at the Kaelen show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (Sept. 6-13, 2012) at Lincoln Center in New York last Thursday.

As you can see, Kaelen's Spring 2013 Collection features the continuation of the peplum, color blockhigh-low hem, and cut-out trends - or rather, the evolution of them with elements like double-layered peplum.

The designer's featured color for spring was without a doubt canary yellow with a slight neon hue. The rest of the collection is presented in neutral hues of black, white, grey, and brown.

I especially love the graphic printsKaelen's print of choice (see: skirt + pants below and above shorts + jacket) looks a lot like a stone path you'd see in a garden, yet with a bit of an animal print element to it. It's very impressionistic and reminds me of a watercolor painting. There were also several pieces with a wavy black and white striped print.

To get a better view of the entire collection, you can view the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week official video for Kaelen Spring 2013 HERE.

Style: The Skull Trend on ANY Budget

Autumn is heating up and the skull trend is bringing ghoulish glamour to the season's muted color tones. The trend has been spotted in the latest lines by top designers Alexander McQueen, Betsey Johnson, House of Harlow, Dannijo, Erwin Pearl, and more!

The style is definitely reminiscent of both the vibrant, colorful art surrounding Mexico's Day of the Dead festivals and edgy punk rocker style. This gives it a lot of versatility. The trend definitely complements the season's other hottest trends: lace, leather, and tailored "menswear" inspired pieces. How would YOU wear it?

Add some bling to a leather dress with a pair of jewel embellished skull drop earrings...

or add a colorful metallic stretch skull bracelet to a tailored houndstooth ensemble...

or accent a lacy skull top with classic pearls

Here are my fave skull trend finds
& the pieces to complement them:
