Walmart Beauty Box - Winter 2014 Review

You may remember my review of the Fall Beauty Box in September.  Well, this was my second Walmart Beauty Box and as a recap: it's basically free (just $5 for shipping) and it comes out 4 times/year. From what I've seen, it looks like subscribers typically get 1 of 2 variations, one focused on a younger demographic and one on an older. It looks like both times I got the box for the younger demographic, since I'm under 30. However, having looked at both I have to say there are things that would make a lot of sense for me out of each. I think the major difference is that the younger one might experiment with bolder colors of makeup and the older one mixes in a few more anti-aging skincare products. Either one is really a win-win.

Maybelline Colorsensational Lipstick in 925 Maple Kiss (Full-size, $4.97)

This was the only full size item in the box. The value almost pays entirely for the cost of the box itself. The lipstick glides on very smoothly for a lipstick at this price range and is ultra-moisturizing. It's also got a sweet smell that reminds me of white cake - yum! Maple Kiss is definitely not a color I would have picked out myself. It's a lot darker and has more of a brown tint than any other lipsticks I've tried before. However, after the first try I was sold. It's very mature and elegant. With my fair complexion, the brown undertones definitely make the rest of my face look more tan - which is always great news for us pasty people! Generally, I think this would be a universally flattering color.

Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream in All Light Skin Tones (Full-size, $11.97)

Of course I've heard of BB cream for you face, but I love the idea of a BB cream for your body! Why shouldn't the rest of your skin get some love too? I was excited to see that Walmart sent me the correct color for my skin tone. The product also comes in "Medium/Deep Skin Tones". This cream gives your skin some instant shimmer and a quick shot of deep moisture. It's got a very subtle scent that is similar to a couple pressed foundation powders I've used before. I know this one's been in several different subscription boxes lately so I'd love to hear more from other subscribers about what the long term result have been after using this product for a week or two.

Olay Fresh Effects Make-up Removal Wet Cloths (Full-size, $3.97)

I was really excited to receive this product because I've actually already bought it before and love it! A full size is 25 cloths and will last you several months of weekend make-up removal. I've also used the Ponds wipes that are pretty similar, a bit thicker. Both really effectively remove the heaviest duty make-up. Trust me, I regularly use them to remove my Benefit They're Real Mascara and Benefit Push-up Liner which is no easy ordeal! I think these are a fantastic value for the money and much more gentle on the skin than a lot of liquid make-up removers I've used in the past.

L'Oreal OleoTherapy Oil Infused Shampoo & Conditioner (Full-size, $5.97)

Admittedly, I haven't used these yet because I always save sample size shampoos & conditioners for work travel. I really appreciate that both are sulfate-free and look like they would be safe to use on my dry color-treated hair. I looked online and it looks like Walmart is not currently selling the Conditioner on their website, just the Shampoo. I'm excited about the "silky feel" the oil infusion is supposed to create on damaged hair.

Nivea Cocoa Butter Body Lotion (Full-size, $4.97)

I haven't tried this one yet either, since it's in a one time use foil packet. The full size version is 16.9 fl oz which sounds like massive value for the money. I've only used the original Nivea Creme before, which is one of the few reasonably priced products out there that deeply moisturizes my severely dry skin. That ones safe to use on your face and body and it doesn't leave my skin greasy or make my face break out. So, I'm already a big fan of the brand and look forward to seeing what their other products are like! There was also a manufacturer's coupon for $1.00 off any Nivea body lotion or creme included.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder (Full-size, $6.94)

Again, I haven't tried this one yet. It's a single use cardboard sample. I'm not sure it's really enough to apply on your whole face. Walmart sells this product in 16 different shades and it doesn't say on this package which shade I was given so I'm not quite sure if I'll really be able to judge the product by this sample. This one also included a $1.00 off manufacturer's coupon good for any Dream Wonder powder or Maybelline face product.

Again, I was pretty pleased with the Walmart Beauty Box! This one didn't have as high of a value as the last one and had fewer full-size products,  but definitely still had a good assortment of product.

Birchbox "The Lodown" December 2014 Review

This month Birchbox again gave subscribers the option of selecting 1 of several individual samples to be included in their boxes or to go with an edited box. I went with the edited box, which is curated by Lo Bosworth of The Lodown (though you probably know her best from MTV's "Laguna Beach" back in the day). I was pretty sold on her box when I saw it included some of my fave brands like Davines, Joie, and Cynthia Rowley. I'd also been interested in trying out a Ruffian nail polish for a while since Birchbox features them so frequently.

So far Davines has been one of my all time favorite Birchbox brands. I've previously received samples from their LOVE and OI collections and really couldn't get enough of all of them. They left my hair ultra-silky, super smooth, and took any tangles out of my hair almost immediately. The Replumping Hair Filler Superactive came in a really generous sample size this time around. I look forward to getting multiple uses out of it. The bonus shampoo & conditioner samples will be great for my next trip. It sounds like all three products in the Replumping range leave hair looking thick, shiny, and healthy. Who wouldn't want that?

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Lip Stain in Heartthrob
I've actually tried most of the Cynthia Rowley Beauty line by now because I attended a special Birchbloggers event at the Cynthia Rowley store where I was gifted most of they eyeliners, eyeshadows, and lip stains. I simply adore all of the lip stains! They are long lasting and come in such a flattering range of matte colors. I have to say I haven't used the Heartthrob one much yet, since I usually go for colors with more pink or purple tones. However, I think this vibrant red will be great for the holidays. My only gripe about the lip stains is that it never feels like there's all that much product in the tubes - even in the full size ones. I haven't completely used up any of mine yet, but at $20 each, I would hope they would last a long while.

Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre
I had a sample of this a long time ago and ended up swapping it with another user on eDivv.com because I didn't know that much about the product and the tube felt like it didn't contain much. I'm actually pretty happy to have received another sample so that I can really give it a chance. I've read nothing but good reviews. I love that this product is multi-purpose - it serves as a moisturizer, primer, and makeup remover! That sounds like the perfect on-the-go beauty item so you don't have to pack three different products.

Joie "Folle de Joie" Eau de Parfum
I don't think I need to go into too much detail about this perfume. I've received it at least two times before and you can read my previous reviews here and here. I have nothing but positive things to say about this scent. It's a little pricey at $98, so I've been saving up and waiting for some of my other perfumes to run out.  In sum, it's a pretty strong scent so you don't need to use too much at once and it has a really vibrant floral scent that makes me think of a classic "English garden". It's described as combining notes of sandalwood, mandarin, and rose. It's definitely a very mature and full scent - perfect for winter!

This is a full-size product worth $10! That makes up for the price of the entire box - and there were so many other amazing products in this one. The color is really vibrant, shiny, and streak-free. I'm also really impressed with how long-lasting and chip-free it's been so far. I've only worn it for a couple days, so I will have to see how it last throughout the week. Regardless, I'm pretty impressed already.

This was one of the best Birchboxes I've received in months!! Admittedly, few of the products were new to me, but that's part of the reason I selected it. I felt like there was very little risk and tons of reward in selecting the box that had several of my all-time faves. All of the sample sizes are great too, so I really felt like I got well over my $10 worth on this one.

L'Occitane L'OcciBox December 2014 Review

The "L'Occi Box" is L'Occitane's latest take on a beauty subscription box. It's not a subscription model per-say, it's just a nicely curated box of samples and travel size items. The inaugural box was created in collaboration with Elle Magazine. It retails for $59.40 on the website but you can get yours for just $15 + Shipping & Tax by using the promo code "DISCOVER". [Update: Unfortunately it now appears to be out of stock, but there should be another edition coming our way soon!]

Set of 4 Limited Edition ELLE Hand Creams (o.35 oz each)
Scents (L-R): Cherry BlossomShea ButterAlmond, and VerbenaAll of these hand creams come in their regular edition packaging in full size 1 oz versions for $12 each. I love L'Occitane's signature hand creams and these are just the perfect size to slip into your purse or pocket. The special edition ELLE designs are so adorable. They reflect all four seasons with a little French flair. The Verbena has an energizing citrus scent, the Almond is sweet with some floral notes, the Shea Butter is luxuriously thick, and the Cherry Blossom is very feminine but demure.

Divine Cream Foil Sample Packets x 2 (0.05 oz each)
The full size version is 1.7oz and costs a hefty $106. I recently got a much larger .27 oz jar sample from Beauty Bar on Cyber Monday as part of a special gift with any purchase offer. Really any sample size of this product is great considering how expensive the full size is. The cream is not overly thick but it is effective. It has a very relaxing scent which smells to me like herbs from Provence with a touch of eucalyptus.

Almond Supple Skin Oil (0.5 oz)
The full size almond oil is 3.4 oz and costs $42. This product is supposed to be excellent for people with dry skin concerns - like me! The full size version comes in a spray bottle which I think would be a bit easier to apply on arms, legs, etc. I love the subtle sweet smell of this oil and it instantly made my skin look moisturized with a healthy glow.

Arlésienne Hand Cream (.35 oz)
The full size hand cream is 1 oz and costs $12. This hand cream is inspired by the women of Arles and combines rose, violet, and saffron extracts. It's a really pleasant airy scent. I think this could easily become my favorite from the L'Occitane Hand Cream Bar.

Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lotion (1.7 oz)
The full size lotion is 8.4 oz for $32 or 16.9 oz and costs $64. There's also a 2.5 oz travel size for $11. This lotion is 15% shea butter and is deeply moisturizing. I love the subtle notes of honey and apricot too.

Immortelle Precious Cleansing Foam (1.7 oz)
The full size cleansing foam is 5.1 oz and costs $28. This 1.7 oz travel size is also available for $11.50. This product has great reviews from a lot of women who have very sensitive skin and haven't had success with any cleansers before. It brightens and evens out skin tone on all types of skin. I look forward to trying it out and am so excited to have a travel size facial cleanser. Those aren't easy to come by!

Elle Pouch by SOLEDAD
I just love how French the design is! It's a great size too (about 4" x 6") with a nice sort of waxy feel to the fabric. It seems like pretty good quality that will last a while. I definitely plan to use this little pouch to keep my travel size makeup inside my work bag. The little word bubble on the front says "elles sont trop mignonnes" which translates to "they are too cute" for those of us that aren't exactly fluent in French.

ELLE Nail File & FREE Shea Butter Soap offer
Last but not least were these two add-ons!  The nail file is so cute! It has pictures of L'Occitane's signature hand creams all over it. L'Occitane also included an exclusive offer for a free Shea Butter Soap ($7 value) with any $25 purchase.

Overall I think this box was an excellent value and a great way to try out some new L'Occitane products before committing to the full sizes. The samples are great sizes to stash in your purse or take on a flight. With the $15 discount, I'd say the value is nearly 3 times what I paid (if not more)!

Popsugar Must Have Box November 2014 Review

This is my second Popsugar Must Have Box of all time (read my February 2014 review here).  Again, I decided to go for the box because there was a promotional offer.  This time, it was through RueLaLa.  I got my box for $24.95 rather than the usual $39.95 which was a great value.

You may notice this is the November box and it just so happens to be December 11th already. Unfortunately my box got lost in the Popsugar warehouse. So, I had to contact their customer service to find its whereabouts and send me a new one. Better late than never though and this box was awesome!

"The Secret Recipes" by Dominique Ansel (MSRP $35)

I was actually really excited about this book.  Admittedly, I'm not that great of a chef and I have a tiny New York kitchen - so, the chance that I'll pull off any of these recipes is slim to none.  A lot of them do look kind of intensive - lots of steps and lots of ingredients.  I'm more of an "anything you can cook on a George Foreman grill" kind of girl. However, I must say that the book is outstanding quality.  It really looks like double the value. It would certainly be a great conversation piece with my many "foodie" friends or the absolute perfect gift. I have yet to try one of Dominique's infamous cronuts. I've never been a morning person, much less a morning person who doesn't mind waiting in hours-long lines in the cold. This book may just convince me!

K. Hall Simpatico Shea Ambergris Butter Cream (MSRP $22)

I hadn't heard of Simpatico before but I have to say the packaging really drew me in.  I love the little vintage whale drawing on the box and hoped the nautical motif would continue on the inner product packaging - sadly not. However, this tube is a really generous size and from everything I've reviewed it sounds like stellar quality. I haven't pierced the metal seal yet because I saw the grey and navy color scheme and though for once this might be a great unisex beauty gift (as much as I would love to keep it myself).  It is described as having a "sweet musky scent" so again likely good for women or men. Those types of gifts are pretty hard to find! Men need moisturizing creams too and this shea butter cream would be a perfect stocking stuffer for your dad or boyfriend.

G.H. Cretors Chicago Mix Popped Corn (7.5 oz) (MSRP $3.69)

I was so excited to see some Chicago Mix popcorn in this month's box. Although it's not an item of immense value, it is surprisingly hard to find in New York City. There's something about the combo of caramel corn and cheddar cheese corn that sounds so bizarre but blends together so seamlessly. I first tried it at Garrett's in O'Hare Airport on my last trip to Chicago in March. I'm thrilled to see that G.H. Creators is available from Amazon, Sam's Club, Walmart, and more! I think it's just as good as Garrett's and so accessible.

Sorial Saffiano Wallet on a Chain (MSRP $49)

I have to admit this was my least favorite item in the box.  It's the item of the highest value which is usually the most exciting like the pair of Kendra Scott earrings in the August box. First off, I generally don't find cross body bags very flattering. Second, the size of the bag isn't very practical. It just barely fits my iPhone 5.  I could probably squeeze in some loose cash or credit cards too, but I'm not even sure my keychain would fit in there with it. Third, I just don't find the material very exciting. It is nice Saffiano leather which is the material Michael Kors and C.Wonder use for a lot of their bags and wallets, but I do find this item a bit more shiny and stiff than those brands. I think I'll likely swap or gift this one.

Tiny Prints Thoughtful Heart Stationery (MSRP $15)

These note cards are pretty cute. They are part of Lisa Sugar's collaboration with Tiny Prints. I like to write a lot of "Thank You" notes so I definitely plan to put these to use! The box also contained a $25 gift card code to use on Tiny Prints. It doesn't appear to require any minimum purchase which is great. I'll probably get some snazzy new return address labels with it.

Wine Glass Writer Custom 3-Pack for POPSUGAR Must Have (MSRP $9.95)

These specialty pens really caught my eye! They're nontoxic and fast-drying. I recently hosted an ugly sweater holiday party and everyone had a lot of fun using these to write on their glasses and keep track of their drinks. They also wrote on wine bottles too which was great for adding to the party decor!  Who doesn't love a wine bottle that wishes you "Happy Holidays" or a wine glass quite literally with your name on it?!?

Overall, I was really pleased with this box. I'm glad Popsugar stuck almost entirely to home and gift products this month because sometimes it gets a little too beauty focused.  Not that I don't love beauty, but there are so many other beauty boxes out there and the home and gift element makes Popsugar so unique! I still think the Must Have Boxes are a little rich for my blood at $40 a pop, but I'll definitely spring for one whenever the high value item is revealed in advance and is something I've been coveting.
