Style: DIY Tassel Trim Shirt

Top: DIY, Linen Shorts: Old Navy (old, SIMILAR), Sun Earrings: River Island (old)
Sunglasses: ASOS, Bag: Badgley Mischka via TJ Maxx, Watch: Michael Kors
Seed Bracelet: Purchased at an indigenous market in the Brazilian Amazon

You'll need a basic cotton tee with a crew neck. I prefer a tank or short sleeved tee with stripes for this project. I found the Siva tee pictured for $9.99 at Burlington. You'll also need a variety of fabric trims: braided, mirrored, pom-pom, tassel, etc. That's the fun part because you can combine whatever trims you'd like! I found all three of my trims on Ebay. It's a very international shirt because my trims were shipped from India, Malaysia, and the USA! Note: Some of the best trims are sold by international sellers so you will have some wait time.

Here are a few great tee options you can purchase online:

Once you have all the materials ready, pick the trim layer that you want to have overlapped by the others (I chose the mini pom-poms).  Pin it in place about 1/4-1/2" from the collar - depending on the width of the layer you want on top - and sew it onto the shirt first using a sewing machine. Next, pin and sew the second layer on the shirt, starting either just below the first layer or above it with slight overlap (I chose the tassel trim for this layer and sewed its border just below the end of the pom-poms). Finally, pin and sew the third trim layer onto the shirt. If any of the trims are made of a delicate material like mirrored sequins, you may want to sew that layer by hand. That's what I did with my third (top most) mirrored layer. Voilà! Your new shirt is ready for some summertime exploring!

Get crafty & sassy, ladies!

  1. I love how fun this is, and it totally transforms the look of the shirt! I especially LOVE that you sewed everything on (rather than glue it like a lot of bloggers do). Great job, Victoria!

  2. Oh my gosh, such a cute DIY! I would've never guessed that you added the pom poms and embellishments! I love that Anthro top, but it was already sold out in my size when it finally went on sale. Thanks for linking up with us :) Now following along!
