Foodie: Second Avenue Restaurant Week

Second Avenue is hosting its own Restaurant Week Monday June 4th- Friday June 8th. There are over 20 restaurants participating! The event is taking place along the stretch of subway construction on the Upper East Side (from 68th - 98th Streets) and each restaurant is offering either a 3 course meal for $20.16 (the year the construction is supposed to end) or 20% off your total bill. The event is being organized by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and the NY State Restaurant Association in partnership with MTA Capital Construction. The event is also sponsored by Skanska, TD Bank, and Venable LLP.

Some of the participating restaurants include: Beach Cafe (American), Persepolis (Persian), Southern Hospitality (BBQ), Brother Jimmy's (BBQ), Cascabel Taqueria (Mexican), Big Daddy's (Diner), Midnight Blue (Italian), Heidelberg (German), Ithaka (Greek), Sotto Cinque (Italian), and Baluchi's (Indian).

You can view ALL of the participating restaurants and which deal they are offering HERE.

I went to Heidelberg (2nd Ave btwn. E 85th & 86th Streets) last night and loved their Restaurant Week menu! One of my favorite dishes, Sauerbraten (a pot roast type dish with potato dumplings and red cabbage), would normally cost around $24 for the entree alone. It was included in their 3-course $20.16 menu with an appetizer and a dessert! The desserts were FANTASTIC - Apple Strudel and Black Forest Cake! I'd recommend the Wurst Salad for a starter if you're not an adventurous eater. It's basically a chopped German sausage with pickles and onions.

If you're not familiar with the area, that particular section of the Upper East Side is called Yorkville and used to be New York's German Town. Heidelberg is the last remaining German restaurant in the area. It is known for its outstanding traditional cuisine and fine selection of German beers on tap. If you haven't been, I highly recommend it - and what better time than Second Avenue Restaurant Week!

Here's a snapshot of Heidelberg's menu and of a typical meal offered during their Restaurant Week:

Bon Appetit!
